What is the maximum heat from a pentium 4 prescott 650 CPU. My readings are around 70 degrees on idle and i'm abit concerned, on load it goes to mid 80's even 86 degrees celcius. Should I be concerned? Stock fan plus one fan inside case only. Read that these CPU's get really hot but no one seems to really know just how hot they can get. * +

Max is probably around 80 or so. Case temperature is 66.6c. http://ark.intel.com/products/27482/Intel-Pentium-4-Processor-650-supporting-HT-Technology-2M-Cache-3_40-GHz-800-MHz-FSB * +

Have you cleaned out the dust and reapplied thermal paste? The CPU should throttle if it gets too hot. * +

no i havent tried cleaning out the dust, as for the thermal paste yes i did reapply when i was getting the cpu to this asrock 775mv800 mobo but one crucial thing i forgot to do was scr*p off the former dried up paste. The heat patterns do seem to fluctuate so the cpu must be throttling when it gets too hot. I'm also getting random reboots but have not fingered out the real culprit. the last time it happened Bios stated that cpu temp was 80degrees. which is kinda the norm temp. * +

Wait.. You just applied thermal paste over the old stuff? If so that will absolutely be the problem here and it would be no wonder why the temps are high. The job of thermal paste is to fill microscopic gaps in the metal surfaces between the CPU and the heatsink, and that is all. A very thin layer of thermal paste is all that should be used. * +

i will make time to reapply thermal paste after i have scr*pped of the old paste. I was eager to test out this pc hence the rush job. And to think i wanted to see idf i can overclock it. guess thats out of the picture for now. Thanks for all the input newt182. * +

proper way of cleaning old thermal paste is cleaning it with acetone * +

watch out for the heat, i did the same with my thermal paste once before, ended up popping my ram chips due to the heat getting too high... Took me ages to realise what was wrong... N needed a new motherboard before I figured out what the problem had been... * +
