i've had instances of both. Something not working correctly in 7zip and other times something not working with winrar. The thing is that RAR (rar and unrar) is not free open source software so developers have to make do with the version provided by RAR LABS. * +

In short RAR and UNRAR used by other software may be more buggy than WinRAR itself. Also tarballs are normally used for source code and UNIX software distribution with additional compressing with GZIP and BZIP which lead to extensions like tar.gz or tar.bz2 * +

UNRAR 4.xx also had bugs when dealing with certain unicode characters. Obviously it claimed the files were corrupt. Switched to p7zip after that. * +

7zip is great for unarchival but it isn't nearly as good as WinRAR at compression or piecing together multipart .rar's

I agree to the .rar part as rar is a propreitary archive format and the decompression code used in 7zip for decompressing rar archives was taken from the source code of unrar which is not as good as winrar. Plus winrar is the official app for rar archives and its proprietary and closed source so its without a doubt better than any other app at compressing/decompressing rar archives, but for other archive format ill have to say 7zip is better than winrar. Thats why i use winrar for rar archives a * +
