I have a HP laptop for the past 4 years. I tried to start it up today.it starts for a few seconds and nothing happens, however I can hear the fan running and the power light is on but the screen remains black. I tried pressing f8 on start up etc, but it doesn't help..has my pc crashed? * +

When you say ''it starts for a few seconds'' do you mean you see things on the screen at that time? Is the hardrive light flickering? * +

4 years is pretty old for a laptop. They don't design em to last anymore! * +

try this first. try and find a pc monitor and plug this into the laptop. turn on pc screen then laptop. does the pc screen work and pc boots ?. if yes the main problem is your LCD screen driver board these tend to go and cause the black screen of death syndrome. if it dont work i am going to say it is time to find a nice new sleek notebook/laptop , or a smart guy that will fiddle with you HP * +

also before conclusion unplug any external hardwares including SD's and modems anythn external and try booting * +

The power light is on however the hard drive light isn't flickering at all. Nothing shows up on screen. Just the fan runs, nothing more..I'm thinking its dead. I'm considering getting a new one. Thanks guys. * +
