As far as i know usb modem is a plug n play thing on most linux distros esp. ubuntu. Just plug the modem, wait a while until ur isp is recognized, click on network icon on the panel, click connect, and it's done. * +

However, not all features are supported for instance, if in windows the modem can send/receive sms or check airtime balance or send ussd codes (like *666), in linux sadly it can't. Been luking solution for this as well. If u know software that does this pls let me know. *
