i think, crazy1 is right, if U havvent dropped it nor is it physicaly abused then 1st check the USB cable/connector, in my experiance, its the 1st suspect. if u r running ''HDD Thermometer'', a freeware, disable it, this software wont let U run/use external hdd... *
