So, I've been using uTorrent for completely legitimate, non illegal reasons. For the first time ever using the program, I started getting cyclic redundancy check error messages in the torrent status. I assumed at first that it was an issue with uTorrent because the drive is less than 6 months old and it's a non-system disk so it's used relatively little. I've been running the CHKDSK repair facility overnight though and about 10 files have been repaired. * +

This is an error reported by your hard drive. It means that your HDD was unable to read or write the data because it is starting to fail. (uTorrent FAQ, though it sounds like a catch-all reply for the error) * +

There can be more than one reason for CRC failures on a HDD starting from file system errors, bad sectors, heavy load (though it's more likely that the system will just hang instead of internal CRC failing), electric problems and various other physical problems etc. * +

A hard drive can get errors anytime. Even from the very second you use a brand new drive. * +

Generally hard drives are not allowed to have any errors so problems are always treated as alarming and need to be resolved in some way. *
