A work colleague recently purchased a full HD monitor that hasnt got a HDMI port so does this mean he cant experiance high definition on his pc with this HD monitor lol? or can he get HD via his DVI connection with the correct cable? I wasnt sure myself because iam only really interested in HD on my television to be honest. but as monitors with HDMI ports dont cost much more he obviously wants to make sure hes bought the right one, he hasnt opened the packaging yet. any help would be appreciat * +

It will still display at full HD through DVI. DVI doesn't carry sound, that's all. * +

DVI long predates HDMI. it was the standard before HDMI turned up. As it also doesn't carry sound it has a s**t tonne of bandwidth even versus HDMI. For example HDMI even up til recently couldnt support 3D @ 1080p with more than 24 frames second. This is pretty cack for games where more is better and 24 is slow. Dvi has no trouble at all supporting 1080/60 frames in 3D * +

HDMI may eventually totally dispose of DVI, or displayport will. But when stuff works well so its fit for purpose and its dead common and cheap, Why be in a rush to replace it? DVI is still good enough for a lot. When it aint it'll die out. If it aint broke and all that....how else u think that VGA hung about for long? Only the past 5 or 6 years has it no longer been fit for purpose and even that is mostly because of DRM than anything fundamentally inferior about the quality of signal it can move *
