mate of mine has seen a intel xeon desktop on ebay he wants, it was either this or an amd system. both are quad core. he asked my opinion and normally I would say go intel but I dont know nothing about the xeon cpu other than its usually seen in business systems. can anybody help me here? how does it compare with a consumer cpu? any help would be appreciated. * +

isn't it built for heavy loads and have 4 virtual cores with it. Is your friend planning on running a server box if not then check reviews and check out their technical specs. * +

no its just for general computing nothing heavy but obviously he still wants to go for the better performer. most bang for your buck * +

Xeons are intended for business/server use. This means they are the best dies that can be had to keep cool and use less power, they support error correcting memory which is of no real use to average consumer and they are designed to work on multi socket board, often coming with unusual chipsets or motherboards consumers don't need. In reality however, there is little practical difference to the average user performance wise because they are the same architecture as the consumer parts. * +

This Xeon is likely to be old. Xeon setups brand new will be very expensive compared to consumer parts. If he is looking for best performance for his money then a consumer chip is gonna be better. Tell us what model the Xeon and AMD is but chances are its a dated Xeon to even be reasonable to buy, and he would be better off with a new chip like and i5 2600k * +

I have been told that the new amd 8 cores are rubbish and the intel i5s are better when it comes to performance but I do have many friends running the 6 core amd chips and they love it. * +

The AMDs are rubbish.
They get the cr*p kicked out of them by Intel quads. Buying the 6 or 8 core is a mistake, because for one thing few apps can use more than 4 cores and per core performance, AMD are way behind intel. By the time apps do, these parts will be badly dated. A decent Intel quad is the best option, they will batter AMD hexacores. They struggle to match my 3 year old Intel quad core let alone the current sandy bridge lineup and the near to release Ivy bridge Intel parts. * +

I think Intel are just nailing it nearly everytime. They know in this long running transition from single threaded apps to full on quad threaded stuff you demand the chip perform in every circumstance and AMD can't deliver that. Intel deliver big time, for example how smart is it that when an Intel only uses one or two threads the chip can boost the clockspeed enormously to vastly increase minimally threaded performance while idling the other cores to save power. AMD are leagues behind in this. * +
