picked up a advent 7800 laptop for 60 quid. specs: amd sempr*n 2800, 512mb ram, dvdrw, wi-fi, 60gb hard drive. plan to install linux only. it currently runs xp and surprisingly fast considering the spec. but however the usb ports dont seem to work at all. infact everytime you plug in any usb device the system freezes. ive been told the usb host controller has failed and being on the motherboard means its not repairable is this right? * +

ive tried uninstalling all usb controllers within device manager thereby allowing xp to reinstall them after a reboot but they still dont work. the laptop is in otherwise perfect working condition including the dvdrw drive and wireless lan. * +

apart from this the laptop refuses to install linux and all you get on startup is a blank white screen on every attempt even though ive used the very same disc to install ubuntu with success. the dvdrw drive works ok as it plays dvds and loads other software perfectly in xp. * +

(what I meant to say was that ive used the same linux disc on other systems and its worked fine) some would say I shouldnt moan when ive got a working laptop for 60 english pounds but I it for linux and it doesnt work. any ideas folks? * +

yeah its ubuntu ive been trying to install and the same disc works on other computers. but the advent just produces a blank white screen just as ubuntu is about to install then everything just grinds to a halt and it wont go no further. no error messages just the blank white screen. * +

I know some people wouldnt dual boot with a hard drive this size but as linux doesnt take much space I didnt think it was much of an issue. * +
