its not only the amount of ram thats slowing it down. the hdd speed and ram speed are even more important. i had an 500gig 7200rpm hdd in my desktop that i let my sisters son and his friend to play with and they managed to push it off the table including the lcd and luckily only the hdd and the case got dameged and now im using my old notebooks 320gb 5400rpm hdd what made my pc 2times slower instead of being an sandybridge i3 with all wei scores over 7 its slower than my old notebook sad * +

the old 4200rpm ides and 266mhz rams are too slow for any newer os. * +

i tried alot of os-s on my sisters old acer note and xp seemed the best for it eventually it has 60gb 4200rpm hdd. and 448mb 266mhz ddr ram and a 1.8ghz sempr*n. a big advice would be if u look for speed is to make the note usable and sell it get atleast a note with ddr2 and sata drive support and it doesnt have to be a dual core the singlecores are enough for everyday users with less demands. * +
