I was looking for a 2nd laptop to replace my 2nd laptop if you get my meaning. To replace an old dell inspiron 6000 which only has a 40gb hard drive. (the default size in 2005 for a budget laptop) normally I wouldnt even consider cash converters but...... * +

They had a acer aspire gemstone vista laptop with a 160gb had for 150 quid which I thought wasnt a bad price for cash converters. Its in great condition to with no visable screen defects. I had a lot of windows updates to do cos it hadnt been online for ages. I left it on for at least 4 hours doing updates and it worked without a hitch. Took it to work the other day, and again worked fault free for up to 4 hours performing light tasks. * +

Then all of a sudden it powered off within a split second without any warning. When I tried to switch it back on it immediately powered up but wouldnt boot up and there were no error messages. I unplugged it, tried again and it booted up fine. Then I used it for a further 5 hours without a problem. The adaptor and lead is ok and there is no dodgy connection and neither the adaptor or the laptop is overheating. The fan on the laptop spins ok... * +

I also downloaded 2 cpu temperature monitoring programs which show the cpu temperature to be 48 percent even when under load playing a video. So no dodgy connections and no overheating. So a little confused as to the cause. There was no power cut but iam wandering could it have been just a one off? Maybe even a minor power surge? My office at work is filled to the brim with technnlogy including cctv gear although none of that went wrong when my laptop switched off * +

I was tempted to take the laptop back to cash converters not sure how they react to refunds? But if it is a fault and its intermittant I may have trouble proving it. Its guaranteed for 2 months but what if they test it and it doesnt switch off which is highly likely if it only happens once every few hours. But even after 4 hours use last night it never got hot, only a bit warm as you would expect. * +

So iam a bit unsure what to do. Should I wait to see if it happens again or just return at my first opportunity? Anyone have and ideas as to the cause? * +

(the laptop is in very good condition there are no signs of any impacts just minor scratches on the lid which you would expect. The adaptor and power lead is undamaged as is the socket in the machine.) * +

PS: IT WAS A POWER DOWN and not just a windows shutdown. * +
