I agree its probably due to old age. Try adjusting your resolution don't think it would help but its basic troubleshooting * +

Its a new laptop, it only seems to stop blinking when i increase the brightness starts whenver the screen goes black. * +

thats the problem almost all hp dv have. Its usually a vga problem which can not be completly repaired *
