so what format would you suggest i convert to, to be able to work with it in video editors. Looks like i will be working with alot of HD content and i want to be set. these ones are 1920x1080 and convertxtodvd does a decent job but reduces that to 960x540. I just need to end up making a decent DVD at the end without losing much quality. So question is what recommended software and what preferable output format can I convert to without much loss in quality? * +

This is one of the best converters: [link]http://handbrake.fr/[/link]

The settings can be fairly advanced so you might need to find a guide on their forums or google. H.264 is what i would use, I think. I'm no expert on the matter though.

Adobe Premier has a lot of cool stuff for editing and is good for converting or creating compressed video. * +

I have tried different editors and i find Corel Videostudio the perfect one for me. I know it better than the rest. As for handbrake yea its one complex little bug*er. I messed around with it. can i not use another convertor ans still choose the H.264 encoder, Format factory is simple enough and avidemux too may be able to give me some kind of output. So with H.264 what output format am I aiming for. Mpeg 2 or MPEG 4? mkv or mp4? * +

MPEG4 for the better quality, and the container MP4 for better compatibility. That's what I would suggest to use.

Edit: I suggest MP4 as I think it works more with other devices, like USB media players, gaming consoles etc... You should google to see which is better for your needs. But it's only a container anyway so it wont matter that much as it can be changed without re-encoding. * +

yea thats what i want, for me to be able to edit it without having it being re encoded further and i end up losing even more quality. I will have a look at handbrake and see what i can get out of it. if I can just have a decent looking clips then i'm a happy camper. Thanks @newt182 * +
