Install Service Pack 3 for starters. Make use odds portable applications. Try to keep the programs that you install to a minimum. Ccleaner is good to clean cr*p of your pc. Try defraggler as well. Other program is X-setup pro that comes with hundreds of tweaks. It use to be a paid application but its free now. Just google X-setup pro. You'll get the code for it from their website * +

why don't you install windows 7 or 8 , try installing win 8 many said it's not stable enough but i think it is cause i am using it seens it is available. *
