hi all. I have a compaq presario cq56 and would like to add a partition. Ive read the help. Followed the steps but at th end i get a msg abt clusters. Please help * +

procedure for xp is right click my computer icon and select menu item manage. from the tree select disk manager and right click on unallocated space selecting new partition from the menu. as for clusters/file allocation unit,i think you set that from 512bytes to 64KBs or so. smaller cluster will help store data more efficiently/saving space for lots of small files,however smaller cluster introduce * +

introduces more fragmenting i beleive. cluster is,simply said a minimum size a file can occupy on the drive. if you have large files and set this to 512 bytes,files of 500MB or so are likely to get fragmented easily. if you set this to 64bytes and you have files of 1KB or less to say,30KB,each of these files will ocuppy 64KBs on the disk cause this is the minimum allowed file size. probably the * +

the data is written faster due to this imprecission however,the disk space is wasted. so the optimal value should be set according to the most dominate file sizes on your drive. i'd say 2 or 4KBs is a pretty decent trade of between disk space and performance. though if your hd is small like mine,it would be the best to set it to near minimal value * +

forgot to say i got window7 starter 32bit and would like to put on xp on th partition * +

i shrunk c till i got a unalocated volume. Then i right clicked and i only gives a option for new ____ volume. Cant remenber if its striped or what. Then i gave it a letter then i clicked so it can be formatted and then it gave me details of th partition i did. When i clicked finish it says th operating system doesnt change a basic volume to a dynamiv volume or something to that effect. Then i clicked continue and got th msg of th clusters * +
