Are all hard disks compatible on desktops. I have trouble with this P II dell whose hard disk crashed. I want to put another hard drive are all IDEs compatible. And i cant also see the rom it just cant show. * +

The physical dimension matters to fit into your casing.... Other than you can buy any Hard disk.... But dont forget to buy a IDE/PATA compatible one, coz most modern HDD's are SATA.... * +

In simple words, SATA and IDE (PATA) are two different connection/cable types of computer's motherboard with its internal hardwares.... IDE is a bit older than SATA, so the later is quite advanced.... SATA uses less pins and its faster than IDE..... * +
