ISS will be sunk in ocean after 2020. Much like what happened to poor MIR :) * +

its quite disgusting to think of all the taxpayers money gone into it and then to just chuck it away after what is only a very short time really. If people are to ever live in space or on other planets then hardware is going to have to be used for a hundred years or more. * +

and also it needs to be in a much higher orbit. Atleast 500 miles above the earth to cut down on the residule air molecues causing drag and slowing it down. * +

plzgvhug, think there must be a reason why there are going to dispose it rather than recycle.. * +

there is no excuse. Part of the learning curve must be 'how to keep the hardware for a very very long time' * +

There are many reasons why its practical lifepsna is limited, lots of isues to write. However the low orbit is an easy one, you wanna get as much cargo to the station as possible, which means the lower it is the easier it is to get there and the more you can take in one go from a rocket launch. Its simpler to boost up the station every so often than it is to make more supply trips cos its higher.. * +

well then that also should be part of the preparation. people will need to travel longer distances so making the ISS twice as high would be a good way to go first. Rockets will need to be more powerfull and carry more fuel to reach further. * +
