This is an upcoming video encoding form of h.264. In short it means higher quality, better color conversion AND smaller space requirement. Some groups in anime and other video scenes are already experimenting with it and some already started dual releases for ''regular'' 8-bit and the new 10-bit encoding. redalert * +

Since it's a higher compression, the decoding requirements are higher and GPU-decoding support may not be available immediately. Also currently no stable release of a media player nor a codec pack/filterset support 10-bit encoding yet. You will need to use betas and nightlies with the proper decoding support. Snippet from one changelog (SVN) * Support for 9bits and 10bits H.264/AVC decoding * Support for 9/10bits output in the OpenGL output * +

If you try to play a 10-bit encode with a player that doesn't support it, it will behave wrongly as the decoding accuracy will be off. It will show similar signs to poor encoding or a broken/corrupt file. There can be banding, ringing, noise, artifacts, pixellation, garbling and other distortions. The support should probably reach most players by the end of the year depending on development cycles. * +

Since the support is supposed to be already in several core components such as FFDShow, FFmpeg, libavcodec etc. It's just a matter of integrating the changes / updating components in players and codec/filter packs. * FFmpeg 0.8 (24062011) - 9bit and 10bit per sample support in the H.264 decoder- 9bit and 10bit FFV1 encoding / decoding * +

betas and nightlies of at least VLC, CCCP, mplayer2 are known to have the support ready. Also disregard the parts about output because 10-bit display support is different than 10-bit video input to the decoder.nerd * +

Rough timeline of 10-bit support: 2011 - June/July - core components, July - MPlayer SVN, MPC-HC SVN, CCCP Beta, August/September - VLC Nightly. Builds and releases: July - mplayer2 builds (win32), September - MPlayer for win32, - November - CCCP, December - SMPlayer (*), 2012 - February - MPC-HC, VLC * +

* SMPlayer project was assumed dead for a while from around spring to December. It clones the MPlayer builds from MPayer for win32 project and missed at least 2 updates. Users had to grab the win32 build from sherpya directly. And the relevance of mplayer2 is questionable. They managed to gain some attention during the gap from july-september, but mplayer2 is overall NOT recommended for use with SMPlayer simply for the incompatibilities and bugs nor as general replacement for actual MPlayer. * +

also other 3rd party codec packs (like K-Lite, Shark) that i don't support and follow very closely probably had the support whenever they updated the LAV Filters to a version supporting 10-bit. Guessing August-October or later. Speaking of LAV Filters, they are the new replacement for FFDShow for decoding some types of media such as 10-bit h.264. Example: MKV 10-bit h.264 and surround FLAC is split by haali, video decoded by LAV Filters and audio decoded by FFDShow along with possible downmixin * +
