disable the services you dont need like win update, search indexer etc. on my pc win7 takes about 400mb ram 
and boots within a 40 secs * +

all my maintainance is set on schedual every 2 weeks registry clean reg defrag etc and every 2 months a boot scan (anti virus) and boot defrag all uneccesary startup s**t i disable only important stuff is on auto startup :) serch index off auto updates off there alotta tweaks to boost os performance * +
