Nothing foolish about using Ubuntu on a modern laptop. I use it on mine and can guarantee you it runs much faster than id did on Win 7. In fact, I'm doing a degree in technology and the majority of us would rather use Linux in any form than Windows. * +

the distro comes with most drivers and the like. Proprietary packages from card manufacturer may be required in some cases. All of the content is in ubuntu repositories and are handled either through update manager or package manager. I don't know does main branch still have it but xubuntu has system - configure third-party or proprietary drivers option in the menu as well. * +

for example ati catalyst control center etc. should be in the repositories so you can find them with a Package Manager like Ubuntu Software Center etc. Note that you have to determine the need for using non-free drivers yourself unless the system recommends or uses the other types automatically. *
