avoid external larger than 1TB?? but why? isn't the point to have as much storage as possible to avoid near future needed increase of space? i would even go for a 1.5TB if it was better than a 2TB. the prices seem affordable i'll be trading in my costly 500GB in for a better one. they are new too. are seagates good? i haven't had bad experience with mine except for messing with its partition. * +

No to freeagent because they are not well built . My bro own one tb freeagent. It has got cheap plastic like body. Though it's ultra slim and write speed is good nearly 60mbps when use with usb2 reading from sata hard disk. * +

so what would you recommend sonicbom? any of the top ones? the barracuda only has 8mb cache from what i saw. i want something i wont need to upgrade for sometime. maybe something like the STAC2000200 FREEAGENT GOFLEX DESK but portable and preferably 2.5 and no power cable needed. Any drive you know that is affordable and not only 7200RPM but 2.5 with no power cable required? * +

I think you are putting too much thought into buying a HDD that will be used as external storage. Just buy the biggest you can find, 8MB or more cache but a good make and not Freeagent. * +

hmm... thanks for that newt182. maybe coz i'll be storing most of my irreplaceable data, memories and things i cant afford to loose. Biggest i can get good cache clearly not freeagent. *
