My old P4 was working for almost 1 year in over 60+C and it was fine. At 70+C the CPU's fan was going crazy. Processors can works in high temps for a loooong time, dont worry. 55C isnt high temp and of course it cant restart your PC. Check the PSU, maybe you need a bigger one?

CPU might be going a lot higher than 55c though. Pw said idle and I think he is checking the temps that the motherboard is reporting. Shouldn't take long to re apply thermal paste and clean any dust out of the case. What CPU do you have pw? * +
