hahaha that is funny... if i saw that on my pc i would definitely know someone is pulling my leg. Anyways will try recovery disks method first before i try hiren. i also doubt it comes with partition table dr so i got that separate. Thanks for the link phemzask and at 7andabit once we save the info we'll have to install win7 then scan and defrag and take it from there. * +

update - we tried win7 disk, puppy linux disc, vista recovery. none worked. so the guy decided to start afresh and try win7 out. but after installing everything we tried restarting and it gave that error no boot system. he fiddled with it. turns out it was in the bios.. one just had to set it to boot from HD first. we did that and it started fine. So yea despite everything thanks for all the input. have learnt a thing or two *
