and when on battery try not to do anything that causes the optical drive to read for too long, that'll eat through the battery in no time. * +

Look at the power options/profiles in control panel where you can adjust all sorts of things like shutting down the hardrive after a predetermined time. Windows 7 allows you to reduce your display brightness if your laptop doesnt offer its own adjustment which is usually on the keyboard if it has. * +

Avoid leaving your battery pernamentally connected to the laptop when you are only using it on the mains at home. The constant re-charging and heat from the machine reduces the batteries capacity. Which is why most secondhand laptops usually have knackered batteries. * +
