theres a few different types. 1 is a dongle type, totally wireless but can be connected to usb if you wish. Another is essentially an adaptor that a dongle plugs into, giving you wireless. * +

if you don't connect it to at some point, you're not going to be able to access the dash and keep track of credit, let alone put any on it. Unless you get a mifi dongle on 3, which I'd advise against as I had one and the service is shocking, allowance stunted, and customer service the worst I've seen since dell. * +

if you wanna connect your iphone to a dongle, you're gonna have to connect it to a pc at some point, if only to track the usage. I don't know any other way of doing it with a dongle. * +

the poor signal your phone is picking up is just the 3g signal 3g phones get, the joys of 3g! It'll go from nothing to full without moving, if you want wireless with no pc, get broadband. Or a mifi device. Either way, mifi requires a pc. * +
