Hyperthreading is still useful for wide scale computing. Average joe probably wont see a big difference though it does work. The whole point of X86 is that it has legacy support. In one way that is good but in another way legacy can hold back advancement. * +

legacy support is support for old or obsolete standards or technologies usually in hardware. Backwards compatability. After so long though its no linger advantageous. Better wiping the slate and starting over. This is the idea over scr*pping the bios as we know it now- it was never intended to last this long. Totally outmoded. Within a few years it'll be scr*pped to enable near instant 'on' * +

I think sooner or later a brave company will take a clean piece of paper and design what a modern computer should be like with modern technologies and not ones based on thirty year old design. That or industry wide standard will accelerate towards the ideal machine with 21st century traits instead of the legacy left behind by slow boot bioses and other such relics hanging on in there * +
