am havin trouble with my laptop and i dont know what to do. it turns on ok, but after about 5 mins it beeps and then freezes. its done it about 7 times now. it only started happening this morning. I have tried restoring settings to an earlier date but it still freezes. any suggestions would be appreciated, thanx :) x * +

A couple of things to try * Boot into Safe Mode then: Start Run enter msconfig (w/o quotes) OK or Enter. Click the Startup tab then Disable All Reboot -- if all works fine then you can begin the process of elimination until you discover which program is the culprit. * +

* If it isn't a program then it could be a system file problem. With the XP CD in your CD-ROM, boot to Safe Mode: Start Run type sfc /scannow (w/o quotes). Windows will check for / replace corrupt / overwritten system files. Reboot. * +

Neither of these operations has to be performed in Safe Mode. I suggest that here because of the difficulty you have with freeze ups -- it might be a lot quicker. If neither of these does it for you a system repair / restore might be the way to go. Maybe someone else will post other suggestions soon. Good luck. * +

thanks for replies. sounds complicated for a novice like me but i'll give it a try. and i havent installed anything in the last 4 or 5 days. windows loads up fine. i can use it as normal on office or internet etc...until it freezes. it always seems to be about 5-6 mins in that it happens so its making me think that something running in the background after rebooting, bt i dont no how 2 check * +

i tried a system restore back to the 26th and that didnt work. should i try back further even tho i didnt have the problems before today? * +

think it might have done something. cuz i dont know that much i decided to try defrag the disk to see if that helped, and its just popped up saying it found something possibly harmful and offered to delete it...which i said yes. Do you think it might be that? * +
