Ok guys im going to have a go at building my first ever pc, my dad is an ex electronic enginer so i have a litte experience in that department. the tools i dont need de-briefing on but what i want to know is what is the most cost efficent motherboard to go with the most cost efficent cpu, i was hopping to start of by buying a cheap one as cheap as pos but not as slow as a turtle, i know all about the socket needed etc dont need graphic detail either lol * +

200 for the whole thing and no software i assume. If so you are talking about secondhand parts for something that is decent, or uber low end dual core stuff like celeron e3300s and the like * +

Yeah just the parts not with an opperating system 2nd hand will be ok maybe not from ebay tho, u can get a intel core for 40quid n a motherboard to go with it for 50, i think, i was looking earlier dont know a great deal so could not speculate on the ins n outs think the board had a 478 socket for the core god knows was flicking. * +

skt 478 is very old indeed, pentium 4 old. You could build a low end dual core, a board with integrated graphics for 80ish, maybe 2gb ddr2 Ram if you are lucky for 20. Ultra Cheapo case and low end power supply for 40. Smallish hard drive prob under 500gb realistically for 30 and a dvd writer for 15. Throw in periperals etc * +

Small amount of flexibility in budget for some of the stuff there. Generally thats a machine that would run windows fine, linux etc. Basic browsing and photo stuff, limited performance but more than adequate for those sorta tasks. If intel atoms can do it, the dual celerons can, much much faster * +
