Still keep this old pc for my ancient progammes. The hard drive recently went so I Slung in a spare modern 80gb hd I Had laying around. I reinstalled 98Se And the machine now boots up faster than a modern pc running windows 7 lol. Just shows what differance a modern had makes doesnt it? But oddly windows only reports the 80gb hd as 2gb any ideas why? * +

I didnt expect it to recognise the full 80gb but 2gb seems a bit mad? Can it be rectified without reinstalling win98se? or will I Need to reformat the hd? * +

As far as memory serves its a pentuim 3 500mhz so must have been quite a speed machine for its day. * +

Format the HDD and make sure you format it as FAT32 if you hadn't. Also, a corrupt HDD often reads the capacity that isn't corrupt, so make sure you delete all partitions and recreate them again. Use fdisk in 98 DOS Prompt to check if the other space is corrupt. * +

Win98 will not recognise HDD partitions greater than 40 GB. Take the HDD to a computer running XP, create the required partitions NOT greater than 40 GB. Dont forget to make the first as a PRIMARY partition since your OS will reside here. Put it back in your comp, do a floppy boot, format the partitions (FAT32). Re install Win98. * +

Also, for W98, if you create the bootdisk from within windows, you will need to go here to download the newest version of FDISK.EXE then copy it to the bootdisk, allowing it to overwrite the older version. This way you will have support for larger harddrives. * +
