define 'thread'. Each of Ati's 1600 ALUs can do an operation per clock. If its as you say it is, then they would label it rightly as 320 shaders but technically it isnt * +

TBH you are trying to break it down to compare to nvidia's architecture but failing simply because they dont compare that way, they are pretty different. Fermi is designed for GPGPU in mind, tesla. Ati hasnt as much. 5870 has1600 seperate ALUs working on operations so they can call it 1600 'cores'. Its that simple. the amount of clusters doesnt compare to nvidia's units either * +

A SIMD Core contains 16 Stream Processors (SP) which has 4 Stream Processing Units (SPU) + 1 SFU + Branch Unit + some General Purpose Registers. The SFU can also act like normal SPU. Therefore a Cypress GPU has 5 SPUs x 16 x 20 = 1600 SPUs. * +

5870 has 2/3 fermi transistors and almost twice the peak computational power. But on the other hand it's much harder to write kernel which uses all 5x x x resources. Depending on the problem ATI GPU usage can be as low as 20-30 or as high as 95 * +

that was the technical one. but in short 5 of them handle a thread. Its a simple and complex mix solution as nvidia got just the complex. thats why amd cards have that huge amout of shader units compare to nvidia but the performance stay neck on neck with each other. in the end not the size that counts but what they do * +

spartan i wouldnt bother with this guy, hes the 1 that keeps baiting then gwets his account deleted only to reapear a few days later with a different 1 spouting the same s**t... av2980 was his last 1. * +

I'll stick to what AMD call it which is 1600 simply because as i said, they can all do one op per clock. Not threads or 'clusters' or 'streams' which the latter two are marketing speak really, much like how nvidia suddenly decided to change their terminology from streams to CUDA cores.
same d*mn thing, new marketing spiel *
