do you know which company come up with that architecture name for 64-bit cpus? so intel were the fast to create a 64-bit cpu called itanium-64 but itanium was not backwards compatible with older 32, 16 bit x86 cpu instruction set.this meant that would throw away our old applications and begin a new life with the itanium line.But it did not happen that way because the market refused this intel cpu. * +

so Amd come up with a plan to beat intel to the game by introducing a 64-bit backwards compatible cpu line that they named x86-64 hence the name. * +
