Is the flexibility of the Linux GUI a good thing? Yes and No. While advanced users can customize things to their liking, it makes things harder on new users for whom every Linux computer they encounter may look and act differently. * +

desktop computer fundamentals, do you know them! if you learned windows, you will quickly adapt and notice most things are the same or done in noticeably similar fashion. The functions and behavior of the manus, and even keyboard hotkeys are largely the same. and differences between different DEs are often skin deep apart from their unique functions. * +

and the differences between whole distros are actually much deeper than what you will see first because what you actually see is the DE (desktop environment) and stuff around and in it. Most commonly GNOME, XFCE or KDE. Also nobody goes out their way just to make their OS obscure as hell. Those people are rare and they wouldn't let a noob on their machine anyway ;) * +

@cheatman, your computer is more than enough to run any linux distro. Ubuntu is good. Or use opensuse, mandriva kde, sabayon, but these require more ram (like 768 mb or more) than ubuntu as they use kde. Visit distrowatch.com to see linux distributions. * +
