my firewall went a bit nuts a week ago. the log listed a couple of port scannings. were those attacks? and was i supposed to blacklist them? how reliable is this inbuilt firewall anyway? * +

Port scanning probes are a risk . Block them , and stay away from those p*rn sites . * +

dunno lol. i simply set UFW to deny incoming traffic with a couple of port forward exceptions for specific applications and leave it at that. http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Projects/Interactive_Firewall * +

I was joking about the p*rn sites . But a port scan usually precedes an attempt to remotely seize control of your pc . I hope you have remote assistance turned off . * +

The log was probably overwritten . Check options and see if there is something about logs and how long they are kept and if you can copy them . * +
