yep i would try what @posit says... if no results just try to restore your pc a month back or few days before you think you had that problem... * +

Nooooooo!!!! Never ever ever ever boot into save mode when you don't know the type of malware you got!!! I say again never. then malware won't be picked up in safe mode aswell because the process causing the problem won't be there or like in Virut case will damage your system beyond repair. * +

Download this apps they're small so you can use your phone. procexp, autoruns, hijack this, ort and Gmer. then rename procexp anythin name the same with autoruns just don't fiddle with the file extension. Don't worry about renaming Gmer the authors of it do that on a daily basis. When you have it let me know * +
