with sata drives it doesnt matter. the motherboard will read which ever 1 id plugged into port 1 as master and port 1a as slave but you designate the boot device in bios vis the hdd boot priority menu. * +

thanks jay, so it's best to plug hard drive into port 1 which will make it master, dvd writer into the seconds port which will make it slave then tell it to boot from dvd writer in bios when i do installation * +
