And if you have XP SP2 then you are out of luck . Microsoft stopped support at the beginning of this month .

go to microsoft site and check the validation. it may be the guy you baught it of is useing a crack to activate preinstalled machines. not uncommon. also check your update history and see when the updates stopped working. * +
