i run both gnome and xfce with 370 MB RAM and they never lag.you are using KDE because of the graphics but you can get more than those with Compiz,beryl,zeitgeist-sezen(makes linux look like MacOS X) unity etc * +

nerd It would take some heavy tweaking or simply building a distro from scratch with a minimalistic approach so that more resources are available for running it smooth. (arch, gentoo, LFS, ubuntu minimal etc.) Possible? Yes. Worth it? I don't know, ask yourself. Kubuntu 10.04 runs like s**t on a single core athlon 3500+ and 512MB ddr2 RAM with 128MB radeon IGP, but Xubuntu is love. *
