if i wasn't clear enough before, blatant blocking of programs or ports etc. can lead to more hassle later on. i recommend first going through the actual applications' preferences and disable updates there. if that doesn't work or if they don't even have the option then you may want to msconfig or block through firewall. * +

You guys r not answerin his question and giving unwanted advice. First of all, turn off automatic windows update, then for all other apps, they have their own update option,switch it off, also in startup, remove ticks from all options except your antivirus * +

Ive allways found it easier to change update options via system. For unexplained reason every xp pc ive used has never allowed me to deactivate auto updates via security! *
