It was already estimated that IPv4 addresses will run out by 2011-2012. You have probably noticed mentions of IPv6 here and there, either on websites or in your personal network management tools. While IPv4 only has a 32-bit address space, the IPv6's 128-bits which makes it close to unlimited on today's standards. * +

Out of space or out of sub networks range numbering? Because a ip range is given to networks. In that range they will assign ip's to machines. So if your network is huge you will run out numbers to assign. IP v6 is just a longer number and the 128 bit is just used to calculate a networks sub ip's. Maths to the base 128 instead of a base of 64 is used to calculate the ip's * +

We've been prolonging IPv4's lifespan for years now, introduction of subnets, private address ranges and Network Address Translation. So here's hoping we move on to v6 soon, enough addresses that even my watch could one, or five. But honestly, the two versions will probably coexist for a very long time, v4 for private networks and v6 publically, to prevent the need for upgrades. *
