I remember when there the war between d3d and opengl . Nividia and ati both picked sides . I never really tracked down what happened with that . Thats why I said I could be wrong . Of course that was back in the directX 7 and before days . * +

more likley your gfx dosent support the required opengl standard. * +

im pretty sure your gfx drivers will come with all opengl drivers 2 so im guessing your game wants opengl4 when your card supports opengl3 or similar. * +

Open gl is a api same as direct x. One is open source one is ms version. Its the middlepart that reports your hardware to the game. All cards can use both standards *
