The only way for me and my mate to take it out is by shutting down our pc it only happens with usb 2 devices * +

EjectUSB is the better option in my opinion, although I've only used it as portable running from the usb drive to be ejected. * +

on vista and win 7 the light does stay on often it will slowley pulse when its ready to be removed. it should be solid on when its unsafe to remove. on xp the light normaly goes off totaly. * +

the cheaper dump sticks may not have a light so just use the eject function it will tell you when it is safe to remove it. * +

as jscott says the safest way is to use vistas own ejectusb icon on the taskbar (normaly) just click it and select the device wait for the safe to remove message and pull it out. even if the light is on it will be safe * +

Just unplug it, never had a problem with anything like that? Hubs, mem card readers, external hd, pull the plug and stick it back in when you need to. * +
