could it be that the mic input jack on my laptop is stereo because the mic plug is in mono.... * +

Your mic is using the internal codec of your laptop. Get the driver for it. It sounds like you are using the generic sound driver of microsoft. * +

wait, turns out after trying the mic again, its still not working, just using my external mic as usual, thought the second time around the recordings sounded similiar, fk sakes, back to the drawing board and more hours of googling. im trying to update bothe the conexant smart audio driver and the intel real hd audio one but its hard trying to find a recent one that works * +

i used the driver update option for conexant in the control panel but when i restarted the computer so it could install, the comp just went to a black screen for 45 minutes and i realised it wasnt going to do anything so just switched it off and turned it on again *
