I've said this before. Avira. By a long shot. Its the only av that I can say hasn't bothered me much. And who said the updates are costly?? The tiny updates are one of the primary reasons why I use avira! It doesnt bog down your entire system, either and its a great malware detector. The heuristic system may give you some false alarms but I say rather safe than an epic FAIL . . . * +
