I have xp with and currently have 200 gigs of data. My hdd is 500gig. I wanted to know if its possible to make another portion of 250gigs and install w7 to that portion then i can copy my data from the xp portion and then delete my xp portion. I do have an external but its only 160gig hdd. * +

You supposed to make two partition before installing anything. If you split the partition now it'll corrupt the filesystem. It maybe become RAW. So its too late now unless you want to format, split the partition and than reinstall. * +

You can try this - when installing Windows 7 it doesn't require you to format. It installs and renames the old Windows XP directory to Windows.old. So you can install and keep all your files. * +

if your upgrading to 64bit then theres no option but to save what you can to yer external and format the big drive. * +

veers has already been told why he shouldnt add a new patition to an already installed o.s. it will corpt files. * +

if it is 32bit you can just install on the current partition but you will have to run a fix to change the boot partition and mbr from xp to win7/vista. * +
