Basically rectifiers are electrical devices that convert AC into DC. Used on a vehicles alternators. You have 3-phase alternators, hence you have 3 rectifiers. * +

Also rectifiers are used in the electrocoating application of automobiles. I know this because I work in the automotive industry. The rectifiers basically allow current to pass through anodes which then charge the paint particles, the vehicle is usually phosphated before electrocoating, hence the vehicle is also charged (oppositely). And as they say opposites attract :-) * +
