I just felt like sharing that the FAT32 filesystem (common default on USB flash and external drives) has maximum of 512 root folder entries and this count DOES NOT RESET when deleting files. When you hit the limit the drive will either fill up with corrupted looking files or will claim to be 'read only' or have other types of problems but you can write any more files to it. * +

Solution is reformatting it again and avoiding putting stuff directly in the root folder but create atleast one base directory and a bunch of sub directories behind it. You can also use other filesystems if you hardware and surroundings allow it. I for example can't use NTFS because the TV recorder and stereos require FAT32. 
And using EXT3 or 4 would block out the recorder and windows etc. * +

FAT32 can support partitions up to 2047 GB in size compared to FAT16's 4 GB. With FAT32, there is no restriction on the number of entries that the root folder can contain. With FAT16, the root folder could only contain a maximum of 512 entries. The boot sector is also backed up on FAT32 volumes. A FAT32 volume must however have a minimum of 65,527 clusters. so you got your fat wrong mate * +

Like the FAT16 file system, the FAT32 file system includes no local security for the files system or compression features. The MS-DOS, Windows 95, and Windows NT 4.0 OSs are unable to access or read FAT32 partitions. Both FAT16 and FAT32 partitions do not scale well - the file allocation table increases in size as the volume grows. * +

and VFAT is the next most common to 32 and 32 is also based on it. *
