standard hard drives use rotating magnetic discs to store data i.e they are mechanical. solid state drives are non volatile flash memory, meaning no moving parts. Solid state are tyically faster to read and now write, access times are also much faster. they are extremely expensive per GB though, because flash memory is considerably more expensive to manufacture * +

flash memory has a finite write lifetime. It isnt like a flash stick, you might only use it to write to a few times a week. talking about a drive that endures near constant albiet low level use in a modern operating system.....i guess it depends how long you plan to keep hold of the thing. i might keep a drive for three or four years, which is probably only as long as an SSD might last me * +

it just depends how much you use it, and how much the manufacturer actually gurantees the SSD for. personally i dont think anyone will have any problems with wear these days- i dont think anyone would have any trouble for more than a decade of use of these things. still, they are far too expensive even now. i can wait two years * +

when buying one check the quality of the controller on it thats what normally set the price on them. for lifetime of a hdd if you got heaps of ram your disk will last longer thats for the mechanical ones * +
