A friend has asked me to stop their computer starting up so slowly. I've done ever thing I can think of, removed cr*p fro the registry and startup list, removed a lot of malware disabled some of the visuals. It's running a lot faster now, but it still takes about a minute before I can open the start menu. Any ideas? * +

the usual registry and starup cleanup can only do so much. you would consider a power defrag you could gain a few seconds beyond that, its a good idea doing a clean install every few years * +

I tried using the windows defrag but I get this error message: 'Diskeeper failed to connect to the service. The service may have stopped. Please see the event log for mor details' * +

powerdefrag is a free tool you might have to repair the os since the service is not running you will have to use the original installation disk * +
