usual advice is to uninstal usb device drivers . reboot and try again * +

ok thanks - device manager is not showing any usb controllers so there is nothing to uninstall. this is obviously why its not working. jay - cpu-z is showing motherboard spec as - 'to be filled in by OEM' so thats stuffed that. the chipset is SiS 661FX rev 11. I'm googling that and not getting anywhere . thanks guys *
