The transfer rate of the standard CD Player is 150 KB/s. Thus, a 52x unit has a maximum theoretical performance of 52 x 150 KB/s = 7,800 KB/s. The transfer rate of the standard DVD Player is 1,350 KB/s. Thus, a 4x DVD-ROM unit has a transfer rate of 4 x 1,350 KB/s = 5,400 KB/s. Note that the speed measurement unit used on CD-ROM's is different from the unit used on DVD-ROM's. A 1x speed in a DVD * +

this is why dvd burners have a shortend life if you regualrly use them as cd burners. not just the motors but the lazers to as your asking them to work at a different frequencey than there designed for. * +

CD-ROM may explode inside the unit if its central plastic disk is cracked or broken. central plastic disk is the one that is usually transparent and is located around the central hole of the CD. With the rotation of CD inside the unit, the crack of the central disk tends to increase, going from the center of the CD to its extremity. * +

If you have a CD with important data (a CD-R containing personal data, for instance) and it presents this problem and you need to use it, the solution is to make a copy of the CD before trying to. its recommended that you read the CD in a low speed unit or configure your CD recording program (Easy CD Creator, Nero, etc) to perform the reading of the CD in a very low speed * +

Very useful info . We should burn DVD and cd below the maximum speed to increase its life. * +
